Amtrol-Alfa, a business of Worthington Enterprises, has become the first company to manufacture pressure cylinders with ArcelorMittal’s low carbon-emission steel, the hot-rolled, pickled XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel.Amtrol-Alfa is the largest manufacturer of traditional steel, lightweight steel and composite lightweight cylinders in Europe and supplies the LPG (propane), refrigerant and technical gases industries, bringing quality and innovation to its customers worldwide. The business, which is based in Portugal, has achieved a long list of patents and design excellence honors throughout its 50 years of operations.“As a leader in pressure cylinder manufacturing, we committed to developing a steel cylinder with the lowest carbon footprint without reliance on carbon offsets,” said Tiago Oliveira, vice president of product development, Worthington Enterprises, Building Products. “We worked closely with ArcelorMittal to create a steel that has a 73 percent lower carbon footprint allowing us to produce more sustainable cylinders when compared to traditional steel cylinders and are fully compliant with regulatory standards. This collaboration represents a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.”In 2022, Amtrol-Alfa and ArcelorMittal initiated discussions focused on sustainability, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of the steel used in gas cylinders compared to conventionally produced steel. This collaboration involved Amtrol-Alfa testing and validating ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel. The first prototypes have been successfully manufactured, and industrial trials are currently underway.The hot-rolled, pickled XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel is made with at least 75 percent recycled scrap and is produced in an electric arc furnace (EAF) powered with 100 percent renewable electricity. This process results in a product with a 73% lower carbon footprint compared to steel produced using the conventional blast furnace route. This has been our track record with our hybrid traditional cylinders, our Type III Composite “CoMet” Cylinder and the XLite high strength steel cylinder.Now, the 31st World LPG Forum will embrace the launch of the Fourtis, Amtrol-Alfa’s new Type IV LPG cylinder. Green at heart, the Fourtis is a unique fully recyclable cylinder that can be manufactured in very different colors and decorations. Built to last, the Fourtis is a thoroughly resistant LPG cylinder – and not just to impact, but also to corrosion and permeability. All this wrapped inside a customizable, easy to clean and finely designed jacket. 3. Amtrol-Alfa, Europe’s largest manufacturer of gas cylinders and a leader in innovation, manufactures the CoMet HP, a high pressure cylinder for industrial gases that represents a lightweight, user-friendly design and achieves a new level of mobility and universal use. Developed with a HPDE fully dismountable body and equipped with a lightweight carbon fiber reinforced welded steel liner, internal polymeric shock absorber and heavy-duty shock absorbing wheels, the CoMet HP (High Pressure) cylinder from Amtrol-Alfa is capable of bearing impact and drop tests according to ISO11119-4/11117-EN12245 and is lighter than traditional cylinders, weighing only 24.5kgs in its version of 20L (including valve). A high positioned open wide front handle (including RFID for tracking) allows improved ergonomics and easy and safe use while the wheels provide outstanding portability. The CoMet HP cylinder offering ranges from 10 to 20L, all at a maximum 300 bar working pressure (450 bar test pressure).
