Amtrol-Alfa Leads the Way in Manufacturing Sustainable Pressure Cylinders

Amtrol-Alfa, a business of Worthington Enterprises, has become the first company to manufacture pressure cylinders with ArcelorMittal’s low carbon-emission steel, the hot-rolled, pickled XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel.

Amtrol-Alfa, a business of Worthington Enterprises, has become the first company to manufacture pressure cylinders with ArcelorMittal’s low carbon-emission steel, the hot-rolled, pickled XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel.

Amtrol-Alfa is the largest manufacturer of traditional steel, lightweight steel and composite lightweight cylinders in Europe and supplies the LPG (propane), refrigerant and technical gases industries, bringing quality and innovation to its customers worldwide. The business, which is based in Portugal, has achieved a long list of patents and design excellence honors throughout its 50 years of operations.

“As a leader in pressure cylinder manufacturing, we committed to developing a steel cylinder with the lowest carbon footprint without reliance on carbon offsets,” said Tiago Oliveira, vice president of product development, Worthington Enterprises, Building Products. “We worked closely with ArcelorMittal to create a steel that has a 73 percent lower carbon footprint allowing us to produce more sustainable cylinders when compared to traditional steel cylinders and are fully compliant with regulatory standards. We’re pleased to be leading the industry by making this new product available to customers that are interested in lowering their environmental impact. This collaboration represents a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.”

In 2022, Amtrol-Alfa and ArcelorMittal initiated discussions focused on sustainability, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of the steel used in gas cylinders compared to conventionally produced steel. This collaboration involved Amtrol-Alfa testing and validating ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel. The first prototypes have been successfully manufactured, and industrial trials are currently underway.

The hot-rolled, pickled XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel is made with at least 75 percent recycled scrap and is produced in an electric arc furnace (EAF) powered with 100 percent renewable electricity. This process results in a product with a 73% lower carbon footprint compared to steel produced using the conventional blast furnace route. Additionally, the product comes with an independently verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
